What a great idea – the whole of the 243rd edition of Mathematics Teaching, the journal from the Association of Teachers of Mathematics, is devoted to Paragraph 243 of the Cockcroft Report. They have also given a link to download it free, without having to be a member of the ATM.
It is more than 30 years since the publication of the ‘Cockcroft Report’ in 1982. I had been teaching for less than a year and it had (and still has) a huge impact on my teaching – particularly the oft-quoted paragraph 243:
Mathematics teaching at all levels should include opportunities for:
- exposition by the teacher;
- discussion between teacher and students and between students themselves;
- appropriate practical work;
- consolidation and practice of fundamental skills and routines;
- problem solving, including the application of mathematics to everyday situations;
- investigational work.

This paragraph and many parts of the whole document still resonate with the new 2014 NC, which is picked up nicely within many of the articles from this special edition of Mathematics Teaching.
Here is the link to it, and I would recommend having a read – I particularly enjoyed Anne Watson’s reflections on the meaning of ‘consolidation’ and Pete Griffin’s thoughts on the legacy of the Cockcroft Report.

While you're on their site it wouldn't be a bad idea to join the ATM if not already a member...!
