Current curriculum or the new 2014 NC - which should you teach?
Sunday, 25 August 2013

Schools are currently in the process of making a decision on which National Curriculum programmes of study to teach to from September.
It is all a little bit messy, caused by a mixture of the hasty publication of the new statutory orders and the hang-over of tests for 7-year olds and 11-year olds which will still match the current/old curriculum content.

This chart gives an outline of the implementation dates as advised by the DfE:

2013-14 2014-15 2015-16
Years 1, 2, 5, 6
  • Current NC for core
  • Choice for foundation subjects
Years 2, 6
  • Current NC for core
  • Choice for foundation subjects
Years 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
  • New NC for all subjects
Years 3, 4
  • Choice - current or new NC
Years 1, 3, 4, 5
  • New NC for all subjects

Looking at the maths, I would advise keeping the Y5 and Y6 class on the current curriculum, just to ensure continuity, progression and ease of planning/teaching. From the children's point of view it will make target-setting and the next steps in their learning easier for them to cope with - keep with what is familiar to them.

More importantly, the 2014 NC content for Y6 isn't a comfortable fit to the current tests. As an example, probability has gone from the 2014 KS2 programme of study but the Y6 test will still include it for two years - and the tests won't include parts of circles which is now part of the new NC.

The same is true for the testing for Y2 classes to an extent, but the changes are actually not that radical. Certainly the number and arithmetic content is more challenging, but that's not a bad thing to aim for. I will list all the specific changes from the current curriculum to the 2014 curriculum in my next post - it will help give you an idea of which curriculum to plan for this year.

My advice for Years 1-4 is to have a go at planning from the new 2014 programme of study. I've re-written all the scheme of work scope and sequence charts for each year-group based on the new programme of study, and it seems to flow well with a good line of progression for each maths area.

I'll let you know when the planning package is ready for you to subscribe to. If you're interested, contact me or sign up for the newsletter and I'll keep you informed.
