Primary maths activities to start 2015 - Happy New Year!

Friday, 2 January 2015
Number bonds and place value activities, writing the year in Roman numerals and a special binary palindromic number are a few small ways you can say Happy 2015 to your class.

Happy MMXV

  • Explain how 2015 is written in Roman numerals.

M = 1000         so two thousand is MM
X= 10
V= 5

M + M + X + V = MMXV
1000+1000+10+5 = 2015

  • Can they write the dates for the next three years in Roman Numerals?

  • Every day in January write the date in Roman numerals on the board. It is a good way to introduce the Roman number system in small steps.

Digits and place value

Two thousand and fifteen is written with four digits 2, 0, 1, 5.

  • How many different 4-digit numbers can you make with 2, 0, 1 and 5.

  • Can you write the numbers in order, starting with the smallest?

  • When will be the next time that all four of these digits are used for a year?
2015
Number bonds for 15

  • Use two sets of 0-20 number cards and ask children to find pairs that total 15.

  • Write 0-15, evenly spaced, either side of an A4 piece of paper. Using a ruler, children draw a line between numbers on either side that total 15. What pattern can they see?

  • Go through each month of the year. What dates will have the day and the month making a total of 15?

14/1/15             14+1 = 15
Now for a little challenge

 2015 is a palindromic binary date:   11111011111

The last one was 11110001111 in 1935.

Can you work out the next year that will have a palindromic binary date?

Online binary calculators are allowed!

Helpful hint: Talk about the zero. A number cannot usually begin with zero, eg 0132 would have the value of 132 as there are no thousands. Explain that sometimes the zero is used, especially when writing dates. 08/09/2013 is the 8th September 2013. It shows that a digit has not been missed and computers need dates entered as 2-digits.
