I've had a number of requests from teachers to provide a list of differences in the new 2014 maths programme of study compared to the current curriculum. Although the new curriculum isn't radically different, with familiar maths topics to teach, there are obviously many specific changes.
The Word file below shows these differences so feel free to download it and share it with staff in your school.
Here are the main 'headline' changes:
-
Multiplication facts now to be learnt up to 12x12
-
A single formal written method to be taught for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division
-
Calculation of fractions included
-
Calculation of the area of shapes other than squares and rectangles included
-
Probability has been removed from KS2, now starting in KS3
-
Emphasis on essential numeracy skills and arithmetic, including using money and telling the time
-
Calculators to be limited in use until the later years of primary
The new programme of study are not unmanageable and certainly allows for some flexibility and creativity in your approach to teaching the curriculum. As Dylan Wiliam says, 'Pedagogy always trumps curriculum.' This is the vital ingredient - get the approach right, inspire the class and teach whatever curriculum is out there as long as it matches the ability of the class. Ascertain what a child already knows and then teach him accordingly. (Ausubel 1968).
